ECRC Fun Team Show Jumping
Area 19 Dressage
This event was held on Sunday 3rd August at St Leonards by kind permission of Catherine and Andy Reeves. Unfortunately it was a wet day and the ground conditions did not help riders to show their horses at their best. Sarah Chalmers rode Tayhem Amanda to 4th place in the Junior section. Seniors representing West Devon were Suzi Maxfield, Adele Colton and Cherie Holmes. I do not yet have any results for the seniors.
Summer Show with Dressage and Dog Show
The Summer Show was another successful day. For the first time we held Dressage
classes at Prelim and Novice levels. Two lovely trophies were donated by the
Wassell Family of Whittaborough and the Radmore Family from Sheepstor. The
dressage was judged by Sandra Jones of Horrabridge and was so popular that we
had to close the entries and start a waiting list! We hope
to have two arenas next year.
The show jumping was busy both in the main ring and in the clear round ring.
This year we reduced the number of serious show classes and concentrated on the
fun classes which were more popular last year. This seemed to work well and our
judge, Carolyn Kingwell had many difficult choices to make.
The dog show was judged by Mr Jim Dawe from Plymouth.

Evening Show Jumping
The first five Evening Show Jumping sessions at Shaugh Prior have been well attended. The ground has been really good. We are grateful to Helen and Roy Radmore for keeping their stock away from the jumps. This has saved us having to set up the course every week and has also looked after the surface. Several people have brought their youngsters for schooling and more experienced horses are just having fun or practicing over a bigger height than usual. We look forward to seeing you all again at the last one on Thursday 10th July at 6.30pm
Spring Jumping Show at Medlands
This was a great day. The weather was beautiful and the ground was firm but not too hard. Entries were good in the main ring and in the clear round ring. If anyone can email me results to correct me or fill in the blanks then please do so ! Check out the photos here with Jayphotos

Dressage Day at
Huxton Farm.
We are very grateful
to Emma Young for judging at the dressage day.
The walk and trot test proved very popular with novice riders and also
with more experienced riders bringing on young horses. Several people hacked to
the event, it was nice and sunny all day. Many thanks to Malcolm Norman for
allowing us to use his facilities.

The Area 19 Indoor Show Jumping Qualifying Competition was held at the Duchy College, Callington on Sunday March 16th. Our Junior Team were the only team to finish with no penalties and they qualified for the finals at Hartpury College in Gloucester without even having to jump off against the clock. Could someone please email me full details of the team and also how the trip to Hartpury went. We weren't placed but I gather everyone had a great time and would like to qualify again next year.
Two senior teams took part in the qualifiers.
The red team were in 10th place after the first round with a score of
4 faults. The second round was much more difficult and we added just 4 more
faults to our score. Several of the teams ahead of us had problems in round 2
and dropped down the places. East
Cornwall were the eventual winners with a grand total of 4 faults over both
rounds. They were followed by Tavy Valley and then West Devon in third place.
Individual 1st went to Laura Morton on Jupiter, individual 3rd
went to Sally Roberts on Buster. Other team members were Jenny Radmore on Bella
and Adele Colton riding Shaugh Lady.
Area 19
Team Dressage
The Area 19
Team Dressage competition was held on Sunday 3rd Feb at Duchy
College. This event was hosted by East Cornwall Riding Club. We sent two teams
out of a total of 22 teams. Each team was made up of two horses doing a prelim
test and two horses doing a novice test. (P12 and N27) The best three scores to
count. South Devon RC were the eventual winners followed by Holsworthy. West
Devon came 3rd
This team was Julie Vernon riding
Manwell, Jenny Radmore riding Double Take, Karen Penry riding Maverick and
Sandra Jones riding Kings Cadet. Our second team finished in 13th
place. This team was Mat Taylor riding Jackson, Sally Roberts riding Buster,
Lucy Luscombe riding Perfect Scoundrel and Sandra Jones riding Diamond Houdini.
Several of our teams were placed as individuals. These were Jenny 2nd,
Julie 3rd, Sandra 4th and 5th and Karen 6th.
Fun Team Show Jumping
This event was held at Cholwell on Sunday 20th January. Eighteen teams took part. The first round was over a fairly twisting course. There were many clear rounds and several teams completed with a zero score. Round two proved much more difficult. The fences were up to size with more fillers and this round was also timed. Many of those clear in the first round made mistakes and only two teams finished with a zero score. These two teams jumped off against the clock. All riders jumping a double clear jumped off as individuals so there were plenty of rosettes to be presented. It was a great competition and we were made very welcome by the friendly staff at Cholwell. Thank you to those members who turned up to support the club and helped with the organising of the teams and collecting ring.

The AGM
This meeting was held at the White Thorn in Shaugh Prior on Monday 19th November. We were very pleased with the turnout, approximately 40 members were present. The minutes from the 2006 meeting were passed out along with an income and expenditure account for 2007. John opened the meeting and gave a brief summary of the events which had been held throughout the year. This was followed by a financial report from Cynthia and Membership report from Nicola. Karen gave details of the teams which had competed this year. This was followed by the presentation of the Members Points Award rosettes and Trophys for 2007. We discussed various options regarding the jump trailer which needs either serious work or replacing. We also discussed purchasing waterproof jackets with a club logo. We voted to change the club colour to green and the team saddle cloths to white. Sarah Chalmers agreed to join us on the committee. Light Refreshments were provided after the meeting by The White Thorn.

Two Day Camp - report from Mell
On the 14th & 15th October four members of the
riding club took part in an adult camp at Stockland Lovell. The weekend
was hosted by Black Down Hills Riding Club and they made us very welcome with
home cooked food including a cooked breakfast and drinks in-between riding.
Our first day consisted of a flatwork and jumping lesson and after lunch cross
country with instructor Ben van Sommeron. We practiced over different
combinations including a water complex; I seemed to get the wettest! We spent
the evening eating more delicious food with a few beers and glasses of wine.
After a nights sleep in the porter cabins some of
us were feeling slightly sore! We worked on the flat the next
morning concentrating on lateral work and flexion. For our last lesson we
went back out to the cross country course and worked on strides and lines to the
jumps.
It was a fabulous weekend which was very good value
for money. Black Down Hill Riding Club are hoping to run more next year so
watch this space for details.

Summer Show.
We were very disappointed with the number of entries at the show. Many events had been cancelled due to bad weather and for once we managed to choose a sunny day! The ground was near perfect but entries were low. We hope that those of you who attended the show had a good day.
Several people have been asking about the photos which were taken at the Summer Show. The photographer was Lisa Seward and her web site is

Training Day
This was held at Cholwell. Michael Van Houben was our trainer. The riders started by concentrating on their flatwork then progressed to jumping. Michael introduced several exercises which most of the riders had not done before. All those I have spoken to said that they enjoyed it very much.
Spring Show Jumping Day
This was held at Medlands by kind permission of Mr. Bill Hitchens. Entries were higher than usual. The ground was excellent and the day stayed dry and mostly sunny. The club was pleased to put into use the new safety jump cups in the main ring. These are specially designed to snap open if a horse lands on the back rail of a spread fence. Thankfully no-one tested them! We also used our new wireless timing equipment. This enables the start and finish to be set anywhere in the ring and eliminates the need for cables laying across the ground; again much safer and more convenient. Another new item was the water tray complete with floating ducks. These did not cause any problems this time.
A Report on the dressage to music will be posted shortly. - can anyone who was there send me a report please????
WDRC Dressage Day
This was held at Huxton Farm on Saturday 31st March by kind permission of Christine and Malcolm Norman. Many thanks to Pat Thomas who generously gave up her day to judge for us.

Area 19 Novice Team Show Jumping Qualifier.
The Area 19 Novice Show Jumping Qualifier at Duchy College was held on Sunday 12th February. Once again our Junior team did us proud and finished in 3rd place. Congratulations to Laura Morton on Jupiter, Georgina Radmore on Dragon, Emma Corboy on Blue and Adele Colton. There were 21 Senior teams of which 2 were from West Devon. Both of our teams did really well. West Devon Blue were Lucy Luscombe on Brixton Beau, Jenny Radmore on Bella, Kate Wilkoxson on Aran Dubh and Jo Leverton on Whizzy. The Red team was Jenny Radmore on Shaugh Lady, Sally Roberts on Jolly Calluna, Sandra Jones on Diamond Houdini and Lucy Luscombe on Perfect Scoundrel. After the first round, the Blue team carried just 4 faults and the Red team were clear. The jumps were raised and the course changed then everyone jumped again. This time the Blue team had a couple of poles down but the Red team remained on a zero score and were required for the jump off against 5 other teams also on a zero score. Again, we were clear but were beaten by less than a second into 2nd place by the East Cornwall team. Congratulations to East Cornwall and Good Luck to them at the Finals. Individual placings were awarded to Sally 2nd, Jenny 3rd Lucy 4th and Sandra 7th. Lucy was also individual 6th on Hal in the blue team. Apologies if I have missed anyone out - please email me with details. Many thanks to all the supporters from the club who turned up to help and cheer our teams on.
Area 19 Fun Team Show Jumping.
Eighteen teams contested the fun show jumping at Cholwell on Sunday 14th January 2007. For once it was a lovely day, warm and dry. We were made very welcome by the owners and staff at Cholwell and the facilities were excellent. After a very busy session of clear round jumping, the competition started almost on time and ran through without any delays. This was largely helped by John, Jill and Nicola from West Devon who organised the collecting ring area. Jane Fisher was the judge and Derek Freemantle was the course builder.
West Devon was represented by five teams of four riders. Our best result was from the Green Team who finished in second place. This team consisted of Georgina Radmore on Twilight who was also 4th as an individual in the 2’3” section, Emma Corboy on Hard Graft who was 1st as an individual in the 2’6” section, Sandra Jones on Sid, 4th as individual at 2’9” and Lucy Luscombe on Paddy who was the only rider to jump a double clear in the 3' section, she was 1st as an individual and represented the Green team in the final jump off riding a third clear round on Paddy.
Many more of our riders jumped clear rounds and were rewarded with individual rosettes. Lucy Corboy (aged 11) on Mr Moondance finished 2nd in the individual 2’3” and her team were 8th overall. Both sisters Lucy and Emma jumped double clears and also went clear in the jump off. Melanie Cossey-Haggar was 6th on Rowberton Timbuctoo, Karen Penry and Maverick 10th, Sally Roberts and Jolly Calluna 9th, Lucy Luscombe and Hal 3rd, Jenny Radmore and Dragon were 2nd.
Other team members were Ellie Wassell on Beauty, Helen Orrell on Sundance, Julie Vernon on Manwell, Laura Morton on Jupiter, Adele Colton on Poppet, Jo Leverton on Wizzie, Kate Wilcoxon on Gizmo, Mercedes Collins on Levi, and Vicki Curray on Marco Polo.
Thanks to Karen for organising all of our teams and ensuring that everyone was in the right place at the right time.
If anyone can email me any more individual or team results I will include on the web site asap. Please email sally.roberts@plymouth.ac.uk
Area 19 Rural Riders Dressage.
Two teams of six represented us at this event at the Duchy College on Friday and Saturday 17th and 18th November. All six riders were required to ride a dressage test at the same time in formation. We attended a demonstration on the Friday evening then a one hour training session on Saturday morning. The instructor and Judge was Zara Pawley. Learning and riding the test proved much more difficult that it had looked especially the canter movements. Our teams had horses and ponies of various sizes ranging from about 12 hands to over 17 hands. This made it particularly difficult to remain in formation. We were well rewarded when our Junior team won and the Seniors came 3rd. The winning team was Jenny Radmore on Shaugh Lady, Georgina Radmore on Twilight, Ellie Wassell on Beauty, Mercedes Collins on Bella, Emma Corboy on Blue and Kate Wilcockson riding Ziggy. The team in second place was Karen Penry on Maverick, Nicky Morgan on Boh, Jenny Radmore on Take, Sally Roberts on Calluna, Melanie Cossey-Haggar on Tim and Maxine Nicholls on Leon. We could not have done this without Helen Radmore who ‘called’ for both teams.
The AGM.
This was held at the Moorland Hotel, Wotter on Thursday 9th November 2006. Thirty-eight people attended the meeting. John Orrell, Chairman, gave a full report on the events held throughout the year. He especially thanked the Committee, Richard Radmore, Maxine Nicholls and Steve and Jeanette who are retiring from the club this year. The club has purchased safety cups for our jumps and also had work done on the jump trailer. John thanked Georgina Radmore and the other juniors who helped him to paint the fences.
Cynthia Cane, Treasurer, reported on a healthy bank balance and thanked our sponsors for their contributions. The club has made a donation of £100 to Cancer Research.
Nicola Palmer, Membership Secretary, informed us of an increase in price for new memberships. There is no change to the cost of a renewal ie if paid before 31st January.
Karen Penry, Team Manager, reminded us of our successes this year and asked for volunteers to come forward well in advance if they are interested in being considered for a team. We hope to send a Rural Riders Dressage Team to Duchy on Saturday 18th November and Show Jumping teams to Cholwell in January and Duchy in February.
Jill Stewart explained how the points system worked. It was interesting that out of 64 members, only 8 had not attended any of our events. Once again, the rosettes were beautiful, made by River Rosettes. Results below.
Felicity Luscombe thanked the committee for their hard work and dedication to the club.
Melanie Cossey-Haggar talked about a residential training weekend at Taunton which she is hoping to organise this year. We would take our own horses and have training in cross country, show jumping and flat work. All food and accomodation would be included in the price. More details of dates, prices etc will be advertised as soon as they are available.
The meeting was followed by a talk and demonstration by Nicky Morgan of Equitech Software about Freestyle Dressage.
The club supplied a free buffet and drinks for everyone at the meeting.

Show Jumping Day
The Club held a Show Jumping Day at Shaugh Prior. This new venue was very kindly offered to us by Helen and Roy Radmore. The show field has lovely views and is easy for most people to access. Although the field is on a slope, the jumping rings were at the top of the hill; they were large and flat and the ground was level. The show was a big success with good entries and some very tight competitions.
Summer Show
The West Devon Riding Club Open Summer Show was held at Medlands, Bickleigh on Sunday 2nd July. The jumping ring looked especially inviting as all the fences had recently been painted. Special thanks go to John and Georgina for doing this laborious task. Thanks also to Maxine for organising the Clear Round ring and to Jim Daw for running the Dog Show, also to all our judges and stewards.
The standard in the Showing ring was first class. Our judge, Christine Cane was spoiled for choice and had some extremely difficult decisions to make. The ring Champion was Hollie Mitchell riding Madrigalls Grandee and the Reserve was Pauline Bloomfield on Aragon.
The Working Hunter classes were fairly quiet but Ridden Hunters and Arabs were very popular. These classes were judged by Karina Legassik. The Hunter Champion was Andrea Smith riding Special K with Reserve going to Tylands Buddier ridden by Melanie Shawler.
More results will be published shortly.

Area 19 Qualifiers – Team Dressage Link to Eclipse Photography - Show Photos
Sunday 25th June 06 was a successful day for West Devon Riding Club. It was the first time a team had been entered for this event. The team - Cherie and Hilary Holmes, Team Manager, Karen Penry, and myself, Mell Cossey-Haggar, entered the Senior Riding Test and Team Prelim 13 categories. We were placed 7th in the Prelim 13 and 4th out of 10 teams in the Senior Riding Test. Karen Penry was place 2nd out of 40 individuals in the Senior Test. At the prize giving Jane Fisher, the Area Organiser, commented on Karen’s hard work and commitment to West Devon Riding Club. On behalf of the Team we would all like to thank Nicola Palmer who came to offer support and help. We couldn’t have done it without her. She even turned her hand to minding the barbeque for us.
I have learnt over the past two years, since I have had my horse, that groundwork is the key foundation to all disciplines. Dressage has helped me to start to improve my show jumping and cross country work. So support the riding club. Let’s enter two or more teams in 2007.

The spring show was very well attended. All classes had good entries; even the 3'6" had plenty of willing volunteers! It was noticed that more people than usual supported the clear round ring. Thanks to Maxine for her efforts in raising and lowering the jumps as required. Results are not yet available, however if anyone would like to email sally.roberts@plymouth.ac.uk with any information to help fill in the blanks, please do so.
